You/he/she ‘can’t see the wood for the trees’, means you/he/she are unable to understand what is important in a situation because you/he/she are giving too much attention to smaller details and not at the whole picture, or you/he/she are too closely involved with the situation.

‘Absence makes the heart grow fonder’ means, when you haven’t got something, your desire for it increases.
