On this day in 1992, The House of Commons elected a woman to the post of Speaker for the first time. She was Betty Boothroyd, the 62-year-old Labour MP for West Bromwich. She is unfortunately, now retired. She is still only the first woman to have been elected. And now holds the title, Baroness Boothroyd, of Sandwell in the County of West Midlands.
